Lord Carter calls for Digital Public Services

Lord Carter calls for Digital Public Services

In his first speech since the publication of the interim Digital Britain report, Lord Carter, Minister for Communications, Technology and Broadcasting has acknowledged that he didn't pay enough attention to the role of digital government and the deployment of public services, something he intends to address in the full report due for publication in May which will present government with a clear set of recommendations in order to “secure Britain's place at the forefront of global digital technology”.

Speaking at the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (Nesta),  Lord Carter praised the 'enormous array of good examples of digitization of public services' and stated that, paramount to continued growth in this area, is an improvement in the digital infrastructure to deliver them to everyone in the UK, and that crucial to this is the marrying of public policy and the markets.

“The biggest prize of all for the Digital Britain report is digital Government - digital public services, and the digital delivery of public services. Why? Because they’re easier to access, they’re easier to use, they’re cheaper to deliver, and they’re much more in the hands and the control of the user than they are of the provider”.
